Apple just sent out invites for the ‘It’s Glowtime’ event. New iPhones and Apple Watches are coming. It’s happening!
I upgrade my iPhone every year, and I’ve gotten to the point where a new iPhone doesn’t really excite me. But upgrading yearly feels like a tradition at this point.
Since the iPhone 6S Plus, I have always gone for the “plus” sized iPhone, except the iPhone X- it wasn’t the biggest iPhone when it launched. The 8 Plus also launched that same year, and it was had a wider display. The rumour is that the Pro phones are even getting bigger this year. A part of me wants to get the ‘normal’ Pro phone this year, as per the leaks and rumours, the Pro Max looks to be getting even bigger to 6.9″ (up from the current 6.7″).
I am looking forward to the new colours . Pro iPhones have always had dull colours, and it was especially noticeable last year with the four variations of grey we got with the Titanium iPhones. I absolutely love my Natural Titanium iPhone 15 Pro Max – it has been out of a case 95% of the time, and there are no visible scratches or dents on the body at all. I think its been the most pristine any of my iPhones has looked after a year of use. I want a change of colour this time but want to use the phone case-less (or ‘naked’ as the kids call it) too. Natural Titanium is the most forgiving of colours when its comes to showing scratches, etc., but I don’t want to have the same colour twice in a row. Plus, I intend on handing over my current iPhone to my wife, and don’t want two of the same coloured phones in our house. I have seen the leaked photos of the new colours, and all of them look equally grey and dull. But I want to see them in good lighting when the phones are launched before I make a decision.
What initially made me get an iPhone every year is that it is the single device I use every day for multiple hours. And, the camera upgrades – the best camera, they say, is the one that is always with you. I wanted the best iPhone camera to be in my pocket at all times. This year, we are touted to get a capture button on the iPhone that will let access the camera quickly and take photos. I might have to find a new use for the action button. I am looking forward to this. As in the previous years, the main distinguishing factor from the previous year’s iPhone is the camera features. It seems that’s the case this year too. Apple should just call this the iCamera.
Another camera related upgrade I am looking forward to is the ultra-wide lens getting a 48 megapixel sensor. The current 12 megapixel sensor on the ultra wide isn’t that great – It’s my least used and least favourite lens. I do use it, but I know the photos won’t come as good as the other two lenses. However, I love using it for vertical panoramas like this. While I am looking forward to seeing the Ultra-wide get a boost both in pixel count and quality, I hope Apple has something else under it’s sleeve. Maybe a 0.8 crop on the lens – just like how the 2x crop works on the 48 megapixel 1x lens.
As for my Apple Watch, I am still using my Stainless Steel Series 7, which is at 81% battery health. The battery lasts a whole day, but if I do multiple workouts in a day, i’ll have to charge it around 8pm. About six months ago, if you had asked me if I am getting the next Apple Watch, I would have said yes, but now I am not really sure. A part of me wants to get a “real” watch and get an UltraHuman ring for tracking my steps, health, etc. But that’s a decision for another time. I don’t plan on getting the new Apple Watch today, but I might change my mind on the 9th.
We may or may not be getting new AirPods, I am really happy with my second-generation AirPod Pros, and I don’t think we are getting new AirPod Pros this time. But it will be good to see Apple update the AirPods Max, and also introduce some USB-C accessories for the iPhone.
I did say at the beginning of this post that I’m not really excited about new iPhones, but while typing this, I do think I am excited. I am not going to back and edit the first paragraph. Tech is always exciting, and even when you think it is not, it is!
