Goodbye, Pocket — and Thanks

Goodbye, Pocket — and Thanks

Emma Roth, writing for The Verge:

Mozilla is shutting down Pocket, the handy bookmarking tool used to save articles and webpages for later. The organization announced that Pocket will stop working on July 8th, 2025, as Mozilla begins concentratingits “resources into projects that better match their browsing habits and online needs.”

Following the shutdown, you’ll only be able to export saves until October 8th, 2025, which is when Mozilla will permanently delete user data. Mozilla says it will start automatically canceling subscriptions as well, and will issue prorated refunds to users subscribed to its annual plan on July 8th.

I’ve been using Pocket since I had my first iPhone in 2011. Back then, it was called Read It Later, and it has occupied a permanent spot on my primary home page on the iPhone ever since. Even today, as I write this, I still have it on my primary home page on my iPhone.

When I find articles to read or when I want to write something about those articles, Pocket is the first place the article goes. I use Feedly as my RSS reader, and I have an automation set up so that when I bookmark something on Feedly, it automatically goes into Pocket.

I am not surprised that Pocket is being shut down, as I felt it coming for a while now because it didn’t receive any significant updates. I think I’ll move on to Apple Safari’s own Read Later feature for now.

Once again, thank you Pocket.
