I have a Backbone game controller that I sometimes use with my iPhone. I have the second-gen version of their PlayStation edition USB-C controller that works okay, but I am never really satisfied with it.
I’ve played a bit of Dead Cells, and it’s a much better experience than using touch controls for a fast-paced game. I also tried playing Cyberpunk 2077 via PS Remote Play. While I didn’t do any main or side missions—preferring to experience those on my big TV rather than a 6.9” iPhone—I did use the Backbone for grinding towards the platinum trophy. It worked okay for that purpose, but the cheap feeling buttons, and lack of haptic feedback (compared to the PS5 DualSense controller) were noticeably underwhelming.
Today, I got a notification from the Backbone app that they have a new Pro controller out, and it costs a whopping £155. I got my Backbone for around £40 after multiple discount codes. Asking £155 for their Pro controller, when their website doesn’t do a good job of telling me how it becomes a “Pro” controller, does not make sense. I can see the new controller has better wireless capabilities, better battery life and a more ergonomic design, but that does not seem worthy of the “Pro” label.
All this said, as I write this, the Backbone Pro controller is sold out. Maybe it’s just a me problem.
